The Price of Progress

I've been asking my wife a question every morning at about half-past-seven: What did they do before there were microphones and sound reinforcement?

How did anyone know to buy things? How were funerals carried out? How did kindergarten children know their parents had arrived to take them home? How did people manage to talk to a room containing more than 5 people?

I'm still working on the answers.
